Or do we go out there with the intent of destroying their will to resist us? The latter, of course. We play within the rules, but if we can put some pain on our opponents so that they won't hit quite as hard, play quite as sharp, or as smart, that's what we do, right?
Well, that's EVE! You may not like it, but in EVE there is a whole lot of us vs. them. And within the rules, we do what we can to take 'them' out of the action. And yes, just like the football team in the example, we enjoy what we do.
Or at least, I do.
"The 1966 World Cup was marked, among other things, for the brutal fouling on PelT, by the Bulgarian and Portuguese defenders. Brazil was eliminated in the first round, playing only three matches. PelT scored the first goal from a free kick against Bulgaria, but due to his injury, a result of persistent fouling by the Bulgarians, he was left out for the second game against Hungary. Brazil lost that game and PelT, although still recovering, was brought back for the last crucial match against Portugal.[45] In that game Jopo Morais brutally fouled PelT, but was allowed to stay on field by referee George McCabe. PelT had to stay in the field limping for the rest of the game, since substitutes were not allowed at that time. After this game he vowed he would not play again in the World Cup, a decision he would later change."
That's arguably the greatest football player of the world there, not wanting to play in World Cups anymore because he loathed the spirit of play to win no matter what, that had begun to prevail. Want to argue with him how "not being a jerk" is irrelevant in sports or games?
Also, would you consider random scamming, random gatecamping, random ganking as cases of Us vs Them?
Actually you could, since sociopaths consider themselves at odds with everybody, even if they don't know them.
Your argument fails because fouling is against the rules in soccer. Suicide ganking and pirating is not against the rules in Eve Online.
